Baseball Plant
🌵 Euphorbia obesa Care Guide
Common Name: Baseball Plant
Botanical Name: Euphorbia obesa
Type: Succulent (not a true cactus)
Hardiness Zone: USDA 9–11 (frost-sensitive)
Growth Habit: Globe-shaped; grows up to 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal.
Outdoors: Partial sun or bright dappled light—avoid intense afternoon sun.
Indoors: A sunny windowsill (east- or south-facing) works great. Rotate regularly to keep its shape balanced.
💧 Water
Water sparingly—this plant is extremely drought-tolerant.
Growing season (spring/summer): Water when the soil is fully dry. About every 2–3 weeks depending on conditions.
Dormant season (fall/winter): Cut back drastically—once a month or less.
⚠️ Overwatering leads to root rot. Always err on the dry side.
🪨 Soil
Use a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix.
Add extra pumice or perlite if needed to ensure excellent drainage.
Avoid moisture-retaining soils or anything with peat moss.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
Prefers warm, dry climates.
Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Humidity should stay low—avoid humid bathrooms or greenhouses.
🌱 Fertilizer
Feed lightly during active growth (spring and summer).
Use a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer once a month.
Do not fertilize in fall or winter.
⚠️ Special Notes
Euphorbia obesa produces a toxic sap—wear gloves when handling.
It's dioecious: individual plants are either male or female.
Rarely offsets, so propagation is usually by seed.
Don't confuse it with similar round cacti—it’s a succulent, not a cactus!
